Professor Jonathan Chan is a Clinical Cardiologist with special expertise in Cardiac Imaging including Stress echocardiography, Strain Imaging, Transoesophageal echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT angiography. Professor Chan joined the Gold Coast Heart Centre in 2009 and is the Director of Echocardiography and Senior Partner. He also holds an Eminent Consultant Cardiologist appointment with Queensland Health at Gold Coast University Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital. 

Professor Chan graduated from the University of Queensland in Medicine with First Class Honours and was awarded the AMA (Australian Medical Association) Memorial Prize for top score in Medicine. He completed cardiology specialty training at Princess Alexandra Hospital before undertaking an Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship at the Harvard Medical School Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston, USA.   

Professor Chan was awarded a PhD in Medicine with his research focused on pioneering new applications of myocardial strain using speckle tracking echocardiography. Appointed with academic title of Professor at Griffith University, he provides mentorship as principal supervisor to postgraduate PhD, MPhil, and postdoctoral fellows. His academic contribution to the field of cardiac imaging has been internationally recognised in numerous publications and textbook chapters, as recipient of NHMRC grant and invited speaker to teach in many international conferences over the past 10 years including Echo Australia, Echo Hong Kong, Echo Port Douglas, Asian Society of Cardiac Imaging and CSANZ. His latest book chapter on “Strain and Myocardial Work” was published in the American Society of Echo Textbook. He is committed to maintain high standards in his clinical practice. 

Professor Chan also has special expertise and qualifications to perform non-invasive cardiac CT coronary angiography. He served on the committee of the ANZ chapter of the Society of Cardiovascular CT (SCCT) and was one of the co-authors who established the first CSANZ Coronary Calcium Score Position Statement for Australia and New Zealand. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography (JASE).
