Associate Professor Ward completed his undergraduate medical degree at UNSW prior to undertaking paediatric training at the Sydney Children's Hospital where he obtained his FRACP. He undertook a year of advanced training at the Sydney Children's Hospital in Intensive Care and Paediatric Cardiology prior to undertaking a further 2.5 years of formal Paediatric Cardiac training at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney. Subsequently he accepted a one year British Columbia Heart and Stroke Foundation scholarship at the British Columbia Children's Hospital, Vancouver, Canada, where he gained additional skills in fetal cardiology and imaging. He then undertook a one-year dedicated paediatric interventional cardiac catheterisation fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.
After completion of his training, Associate Professor Ward was appointed as Assistant Professor to the Variety Children's Heart Centre Winnipeg, Canada where he worked for eighteen months prior to returning to Australia to a joint appointment at the Mater Children's Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. He established the cardiac service at the Mater Children's Hospital along with the fetal cardiac service at the Mater Mother's Hospital and jointly established the paediatric cardiac interventional service at the Prince Charles Hospital. He also undertook a number of trips to Fiji in conjunction with Operation Open Heart. He is currently employed full-time at the Queensland Children's Hospital and is Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory. In addition to interventional cardiac catheterisation, he also has a special interest in fetal cardiology
Associate Professor Ward won the Laura MacRae fellow of the year aware whilst in Vancouver. He has written numerous research papers both as a trainee and consultant and served on the Royal Australian College of Physicians Written Examination committee, Queensland State Committee of the College of Physicians and is currently on the Royal Australian College of Physicians Senior National examination panel.
